About Eagle Bay Nature Reserve

Eagle Bay Nature Reserve is located along the rugged coastline of Washington State, encompassing broad stretches of temperate forest, coastal wetlands, and rocky shorelines. This protected area conserves critical habitat for numerous bird species including bald eagles, herons, and migratory shorebirds. The reserve’s geography features a blend of old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar forests interspersed with intertidal zones and estuaries where fresh and saltwater mix. Established to protect the fragile coastal ecosystem and promote sustainable recreation, Eagle Bay provides visitors with opportunities for hiking along well-maintained trails, tidepool exploration, and wildlife viewing. The reserve also includes several quiet coves and viewpoints offering sweeping vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Historically, the region was inhabited by Coast Salish tribes who utilized the bountiful marine and forest resources, and some cultural sites remain protected. Recreational facilities include interpretive signage and a small visitor center staffed seasonally, making it accessible for families and nature enthusiasts. Popular activities include birdwatching—especially during seasonal migrations—and photography of the reserve's abundant flora. The combination of coastal and forest environments creates a unique outdoor experience distinct from other protected areas in the region, drawing both local visitors and eco-tourists. The reserve plays an important role in regional conservation efforts by maintaining habitat continuity and supporting endangered species.
